Could transit issues be a factor with Franklin development?
Earlier today, the Oak Creek NOW reported that with the recent boom in retail, along with the Drexel Town Square project, the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) will be expanding service to accommodate the new development. While the lack of transit options in Oak Creek wasn't a factor in getting a mega development like Drexel Town Square off the ground, could something similar proposed in Franklin be slowed down because of future needs possibly requiring transit?
Over the years, Franklin residents in general haven't been too fond of the concept that the MCTS could expand into the community. When transit to the Franklin Business Park was eliminated many years ago, there was more praise than frustration over the loss. Many suburbanites view the MCTS as a method to bring "undesirables" to their places of shopping, dining, even living. Therefore, could there be an agenda to keep areas that could have major growth with large-scale projects on the backburner?
Currently, Franklin is researching the feasibility of what growth can be achieved in three parts of the community - 76th & Rawson, near the county line along 27th Street (south of the hospital) and an area near the Loomis Road & Ryan Road intersection. To bring in these larger scale projects and get the maximum value, leaders have to weigh in the future of a community that doesn't have a ton of transit options, but likely will need them to retain and sustain businesses. Perhaps that's a reason why other suburbs seem to move forward a lot faster than our own. They're willing to jump in and take the risk for what they believe will be an net gain for their communities.
